What's New About Us Packing List

About Christine Columbus

There we were on a dead run through the Schipol train station, I was huffing and puffing my way up the stairs, trying to reach the train for the first leg of our six-week Amsterdam to Aswan (Egypt) grand tour before it pulled out.

We'd spent four months planning this trip and I carefully selected what I thought was the proper luggage, gear and gadgets. Yet I still got much of it wrong! And during the scramble to make the train I began to mentally compile the list of where I'd gone wrong, and what I'd do differently the next time.

And what a list: For instance, my male travel partner and I bought identical luggage. It worked great for him, since he's bigger and stronger. For me, on the other hand, the problem was battling my unstable and heavy bags with my wrist, arm, and back. At that moment I made a vow: "Never to be satisfied with cumbersome, masculine, heavy, hard-to-carry travel gear again!"

Many of my other travel gear choices, however, were on-the-money, but only because I had all that time to search. Once we got going, I soon discovered just how ill-prepared many other women travelers were, suffering from time constraints and lack of places to shop for what they need.

This got me thinking and upon my return I was determined to help women take the burden out of finding quality, lightweight, compact travel products for safer, easier, and more rewarding travel.

It wasn't easy. Then, almost everything for travel was in masculine styles, colors, sizes and weights, with little thought given to the specific needs of women. For example, what was usually described as women's travel clothing was frequently men's Safari styles, downsized for smaller women's frames but without the features women want. "I'm going traveling, not wild game hunting!" I'd exclaimed. But I kept searching, painstakingly reviewing, testing, and trying products that offered the best value, that were sturdy but lightweight and reasonably priced, and that, most importantly, were suitable for women.

Five years ago we launched the Christine Columbus catalog devoted specifically to women travelers, providing an unique assortment of 160 items -- all in one convenient "store". The response has been terrific!

Now we've made it even easier to shop. In 1997, we launched the catalog on the Internet! Christine Columbus, the first printed catalog for the woman traveler, is now the first on-line women's travel catalog. I created a store for you to visit anytime, which offers the best selection, value, and quality in travel products for your safety, comfort, and convenience. Be sure to check out our Six Reasons for shopping with us.
